REINVENTANDO ESPACIOS PARA EL JUEGO
Mis consentidos, it is not new that today's homes are usually quite small or poorly distributed. If we add to that that in that small space we have to put all our personal belongings and essential elements to be able to meet our basic needs, the space is looking smaller and smaller. Not only do we notice it, so do children notice that they cannot move or play freely in their own house.
Although at first instance it may seem that this is solved by having a big house, the truth is that it is not a question of size or space but of how to use of it. Sometimes we think that we need very large spaces or the latest toys and accessories that have gone on sale so that our children have the best experiences and develop in the best possible way. Nor is it a mystery that we usually buy such materials to entertain them and make them happy while leaving them the freedom to do other things. As you have seen in some sections from our website, we have gone back to other times, and this time it was not going to be less. In this case we wanted to refer to our childhood, where everything was more natural and where we gave free way to our imagination and our creativity. For example, the schoolyard and park were always the perfect places to play kitchens or to make "arena fina".
We have had a period of reflection and research to realize the reality in which we live, what it would be, in our view since there are a thousand ways of looking at it, the ideal to live and how we wanted to adapt it to meet all our expectations and requirements (and we hope that also yours, mis consentidos). In addition, everything is correctly explained so that you can learn more about children, about your spaces and some strategies that you can follow.
With the proposals that we leave below we have wanted to offer you strategies to try to improve your realities and that those from the children around you, in a very simple way in which you only have to use your imagination and creativity. Here are some examples to inspire you, but each can adapt it to its own reality:
As you know, children are very different and develop as they grow both physically and intellectually, but not at all ages they play and are interested in children games. You have to differentiate large stages from children from 0 to 6 years old, which are better explained a little below, so we recommend that you continue reading if you want to know more. On the one hand there is the free movement, from 0 to 3 years, in which the children develop their motor skills, linguistics, etc., and on the other hand, the stage of free play, which usually extends from 3 to 6 years in which children are usually more developed and are more interested in other types of games such as symbolic play.
Movimiento libre
Creating a space and a context at home to encourage children's play and free movement is a very easy and important thing for their emotions to develop and express, among many other things.
We suffer sometimes a strange fear of seeing empty spaces, filling our houses with decoration that in most cases mean nothing to us, but we can more fill that gap. We ourselves, at times, feel overwhelmed to see everything recharged and without space to leave a book. Our children try to find spaces to be able to play, imagine... In addition, we must join in the fact that we tend to think that the best toy is the most expensive, which are usually completely stereotyped. Those toys are left piling up in the rooms when they lose the attention of those first few days.
What we all need is space where we can vent and grow, and that is what our babies need, first and foremost it is safe space in it they can evolve as long as they need.
Movement represents much more than a functional pleasure for children, it is the instrument and the way of expression of their orientation in the environment, of their intelligent actions, of their social behavior and the affection that they feel and of how it feels. To achieve this freedom we must trust the child, transmit affection, affection, love to them and make them feel that we are by their side, accompanying but giving them the freedom to do what they want.
That is why we have focused for the first stage in the studies of Dr. Emmi Pikler. The pediatrician, who studied in Vienna, bases her studies on the spaces in which children can move freely without being imposed any movement, as they must follow their own process of psychomotor development autonomously.

To begin with we have noticed the first stage from 0 to 2 years (until they start walking on their own).
We wanted to give it the importance it really has, which is a lot. Since we were born we are forced to put ourselves in certain positions that we would never have reached by ourselves, we see that we are placed to crawl, when we are not prepared the same, and that is that growing is a race in the background, not of speed.
By forging the baby's abilities for themselves, it gives them enough security to keep moving forward, to continue exploring, without having to have in our first years of life any kind of external pressure that forces us to do what we will naturally do in more or less time.
That doesn't mean we leave them anywhere or near dangerous elements, because that's where we come in, to create a bond so strong that, even if it sounds like a lie, it's better than a hand holding you, because it generates power and self-esteem enough to face everything that comes before you.
That is when we can explain this model. To do this we need ample space, a real floor, with elements at your fingertips that are stable, where you can hold on, touch them, pass through them, without any danger.
These Pikler’s recreated elements may be an option as they can be made with recycled items, but it's certainly not the only one, because we don't need to have all this at home. As we have said before, it is very important to provide them with a space, moving sofas, furniture or whatever it takes, and leaving things you are not in danger with.
And it is that, mis consentidos, we always look for the most difficult part of life, when the solution is usually in sobriety, in the environment that is generated and above all in attitude.
We invite you to do so, hoping that you will result. But not without first stressing that for this to work, it is much more important to first work the link, between the little one and the reference figure.
Remember, first of all, that we should open our minds and fill them with positivism, trust and love, so that we can foster our little ones that same thing in addition to being able to develop in a correct way, with the autonomy and self-confidence they need.

With these kinds of elements that are not structured get, a safe grip, crawl through different areas, get raised while they are held in any of them, and also with the progressive growth of the child we will make it a perfect place for various symbolic games.
I want to defend the idea that it is not necessary to buy or build any of these elements, since any everyday element on a firm basis, the ground, will make the child know the environment and goes out of its own. That is if by providing them with a large space in which they can move and discover.
PiklerTriangle and Cube:
They are modifiable elements with a rigid structure that allows to develop the motor skills of the little ones, it is basically climbing places. This means that they have a mini-park created for their size, so that on a small scale they can crawl, pull down the ramp, climb, swing, climb and descend, and experience new feelings and movements until they discover for themselves their own limits.
When they are already sure to make their first moves, and have overcome the first difficulties. And after that, they will continue to use it themselves and through that it will be an ideal place for symbolic play.

Otra propuesta:
First of all, we should emphasize that it is very important that in the space between natural light, so you should try to place it in a very bright room with large windows. As for the objects, first of all we have put a mat, but you can also put a play blanket or a carpet on the floor. As at this stage children are learning to sit, kneel and stand, we should avoid catching them before they fall, and we should let them experiment with their bodies and explore their abilities. We must leave them enough freedom to try and discover for themselves, for example, that if they fall to the ground nothing happens. Parents should be calm because that's why we've put something soft under them, so that when hit they don't get hurt. So knowing that they cannot be hurt, we must unleash their actions: they must learn for themselves that if they stand up, they can fall, but nothing will happen to them. In the end, it is about learning from experience, and if we don't let them fall, there won't be any.
In addition, we have placed a mirror on the wall at ground level to make it up to it. We should try to have a ‘safe mirror’ as they do not break and will be very important to avoid possible accidents. We believe that it is a very important element since from the 10 months they begin to have more interaction with it, sucking it and playing with the hands, which motivates the maturation of the brain, and in particular the way to process all the information that is received and the perception. In addition, it improves coordination and precision in their movements, causing the creation of their own ego.
We have also put up a bar, but we need to make sure it's well anchored to the wall so that there is no mishap and that the height is right when the baby is seated and standing. The baby must be able to hold on and be able to help himself to sit, stand up, or even walk. Since not everyone has such a bar in their house, you can put another rigid object that can help to hold on, but always considering that it must be anchored to the wall or that it is too heavy so that it does not fall on them.
We have also placed two cushions to experiment with them, so that they are climbed on top or are able to move them, since this also facilitates the development of their motor capacity. The cushions are an element that we all usually have at home, but you can also put some other similar element like some low box or some cubes. A good option would be to change the cushions so that they can try different textures: some will be harder, and others will be softer, they can be velvet, hair, fabric...
Finally, we have added a treasure basket. In it, we have included elements that make noise, which have different textures or different weights. All this will help them discover and experience for themselves the sounds, volumes and weights, and will enhance the development of their motor skills.
Although all these materials are very specific, they can be easily replaced with the ones we have each in our house, without having to buy them. We want to emphasize that the most important thing is that it is a wide place, where they can move freely, and where natural light enters. To get a large space for them you don't need to have a large house, but to relocate the elements of the room so that the space is clear for them.

At this stage, children experience major intellectual and physical changes (usually a significant advance in fine psychomotority, in the feet where the foot bridge pad that babies have disappears and they are also more upright).
To adapt the context that favors play and movement for children, it is important that we know their evolutionary moment.
At the age of two, children want to reinforce their independence, they tend to explore the world around them more, and begin to understand affection and love. With interactions with the outside world, they will build their thinking and improve their oral expression. It is a sensitive stage ''to why'', especially in children where language is already very developed. It will begin a stage of imagination and fantasy, the magical and innocent thought that young children have. It's really strange for a 2-year-old to play with another child because they're not usually interested in other children (but they are in their toys). This stage of play is called 'parallel game', they may be playing the same thing, or just something else but close to them and nevertheless not want to participate in other people's games.
At the age of three, children usually begin to understand each other better, their vocabulary increases and perfects words that he once abbreviated. At this stage children expand their social world, not only with their close family, but also with other children. It is also at this stage that they begin to understand simple rules of society and rules of games. At this age is when they are interested in each other's games and will start going with other children to play, socializing even more with older children. It is also a playing period in which they don't want to share, and if you do it will be for a short time.
Having reviewed the evolutionary development of children aged 2-3 years, ideally creating a context that adapts to it. In our case we have chosen a large space so that children can move freely and are not bumping into the furniture etc., which can be achieved by setting away all the objects that are around the room. In that space, you can observe a kind of curtain that can be obtained by putting any kind of cloth for children to hide from the adult's gaze making him look for him and make him feel important. There is also a ramp that connects one space with another, which can serve for many things, among others, for the symbolic game, since it is something they usually play with these ages. Finally we have added a mirror that serves for children to develop their self-concept: around the age of two, it develops more, symbolic play and imitation; and by the age of three children already acquire sexual identity, which will allow them to advance in the construction of their self-concept.
It is not necessary to have a very big house or all the materials, in fact many of these can be made ourselves, although it has to be safe and facilitate the autonomous movement of children. The important thing is that with this space and materials, children promote their autonomy, play and explore, giving them simple objects so that they are the ones who give them different utilities without something already set. For example a simple cardboard box can be used to play in and out, hide, etc. depending on each child will use it for one thing or another, but it is a very open object that can help them to each give them the use they want.

Juego libre
Children must have space at home to move freely, to explore, discover and to be able to implement as many actions as their mind and creativity allow them (although if you have read all of the above, you know that, mis consentidos). Although ideally the stay was not overloaded with objects or elements that prevent them from carrying them out, we can adapt it. What we are going to do is transform reality and for this we will give it a new perspective and a new meaning. There is not a single possibility and we can check that when we change the decoration of our room. With changing a couple of furniture site and adding a couple of ornaments, the room and its atmosphere seems to us to be completely different. This can be done by the children or we can do this by giving them a surprise and letting them give it meaning.

The proposal we have made has been a laser labyrinth in the hallway. Even if we have chosen this reference space you can choose another one that suits your needs and your reality. It's a very simple thing for you to simply need a little rope or fabrics (it can be done with almost any element you have as toilet paper or pinocchio paper) and a little wit to create our laser maze. Maybe you're wondering, why in the hallway? Because the corridor symbolizes a place of passage, a path. A path represents the transition from one stage to another (although we can make many representations, one of them could be the transition from free movement 0-3 to symbolic free play 3-6, ages that we have chosen although symbolic free play will continue to accompany us in different ways throughout our lives), from one place to another, from one moment of our lives to another... In them we always leave some other footprint or some other trace to be able to identify it later. In fact, we usually establish connections between some paths, so that we organize and spin them in one way or another depending on our evolutionary moment and our personality. In our lives we are continually going on paths, some are new and some are not so much. We need to have a solid and safe haven that we can always go back to and to which we always find our way back so that we can fly, experiment, innovate, take risks, enjoy and learn peacefully.
A labyrinth is a path in which we find obstacles and in which, as in many stages of our life, there is chaos and difficulty. However, with the help of our ingenuity, we managed to overcome it. This will allow children to have a real experience that they will bring meaning to and travel with to other places and to other worlds. A child can adopt the attitude of a ninja who is improving his acrobatic skills and techniques; another may be an explorer who goes in search of the treasure at the end of the road; and yet another may be a pirate who has been locked in a cave and from which he will get out thanks to the strategies he has developed to overcome it. There are endless possibilities, as many as children can think of. As long as they overcome it they are free to think, believe, do and feel. They can repeat it as many times as they want, back and forth, one way or another and when they're done, they'll always be at home, in their safe place and of reference they've come to because of their instinct and where they meet people with those who will share that and many other experiences.
With this we want to offer families a new perspective of their home so that they can transform it with few resources and give it meaning. Mostly everything from our disposal, we just dare to risk doing something different and meaningful for our children and get them to have a wonderful experience in which they can move and enhance their creativity and imagination. The easiest thing is for us to stay in our comfort zone, but we cannot afford to stay there and educate our children to settle down and always follow the plan in place.
The movement in this game makes us proud of our process because when we started it, we didn't think we were going to be able to get it. It requires concentration, skill, strategy, but above all fun, wanting to want to overcome it and ambition because we do not want to keep the basics that we already have and know but we want to go further and overcome one by one the difficulties that are presented to us. It is certainly a good way to boost those skills and to be surprised by others that we don't otherwise pay much attention to.
This laser labyrinth is a stimulus with which we provide children with playful and transverse experiences with which they are rehearsing for daily life and through which they are already interacting with reality, whether they are not aware of it or do not understand it yet. However, those strategies they develop during the game will be employed in the future because they always remain in some corner of their inner self.

Coming up to an end, the proposal we have made is the construction of an obstacle course. It is very simple to create, just cartons or cardboard (to make those obstacles), or directly use elements of the house (such as some furniture or toys). The only thing that we would miss would be to place the objects that we are going to use and we would be ready to start enjoying the tour. As we have already said and have been able to observe, it can be made with materials that each one has in their homes, without having to spend a big amount of money. This proposal can be made both indoors and outdoors, because if the house has an outdoor patio, for example, that could be an ideal space to build an obstacle course and that the child can also make contact with nature and outdoors. If we decide to create it in an interior space, we can do it in any room where we can move the furniture and can adapt it (as for example in the entrance, the living room...). On the other hand, if we want to make it in an outdoor space, we will have the advantage of not having to adapt that space so much since it is not usually overloaded and is wider.
As for the obstacles of the circuit, they are not there to prevent the achieving of what you want to achieve, but are those barriers that appear along the way to give the opportunity to show the desire and interest that you have to achieve a goal. These obstacles, as we have said before mis consentidos, can be a myriad of objects, whether can be made by ourselves or with some toys that we find at home, and the help of some furniture. If we place some furniture or toys that children have in their rooms or throughout the house in general, we can position them in such a way that they have to resort to their agility to crouch down, (in the case of creating barriers formed by chairs), jump, (if we put an object which is supported on the ground and is raised) , dodge (if we put some blocks glued to a wall and have minimal space to pass), etc. Here are some examples we thought you might do. However, the truth is that children are unpredictable and because they will not have any guidelines on how they should overcome obstacles, they will surprise us using the imagination and creativity that characterizes them. This will help children to have one more experience of play and improvement. In addition, they can do it as many times as they want and there is no default start, so they can start it from anywhere on the circuit.
This activity is based on the symbolic game for the 4-5 year stage, where laterality is beginning to be defined, that is, the motor predominance in the use of one of the two symmetrical halves of the body either the left or right half, depending also on the hemisphere that predominates (left or right) respectively. At age 4, the child stands on one foot, climbs, tiptoes, kicks a ball with ease... And at age 5, the child reaches a great sense of balance and rhythm.
With this proposal we want to help families have another point of view about their domestic spaces and for children to foster basic skills such as endurance or speed. In addition, it will be a fun experience where children will develop and enhance other new skills without realizing it, such as balance, coordination or agility. And it can be very useful in this situation where we live so that they can blur all the energy they carry inside and continue to be active both physically and mentally.

We hope you see your domestic space as a new opportunity where you can create environments that favor the evolutionary development, imagination and creativity of children. Spaces in which they can move and play freely whatever they want, while they are transported to a new reality that causes them curiosity and that they would like to explore and discover through their senses while developing and enhancing their skills, abilities, emotions and strategies that will allow them to get fully into the role.
